Don’t judge every product at face value.
Just remember, one of the primary goals of any company is to sell their product and make a tidy profit. Unfortunately, this might mean ‘blurring the lines’ or a little bit of trickery when it comes to promoting their goods. In most circumstances, there’s no harm done. However, it’s important to be aware of this when assessing the nutritional and monetary value of a particular item!
Let’s take Uncle Tobys Oats: Ancient Grains as an example. At first glance, its costly price is worth the expense due to the inclusion of rye, quinoa and millet (in addition to oats). This gives the product a big nutritional tick for added whole grains plus increased nutrient and fibre diversity. However, looking a little closely it becomes apparent that there is only 2g rye, 0.5g quinoa and 0.5g millet per 50g serve! This is an incredibly insignificant amount and not worth the pricing at $0.85 per 100g. Especially when compared to other products such as Woolworths home brand oats at $0.19 per 100g*.
Moral of the story - don’t judge a book by it’s cover. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is! If unsure, check out the nutrition panel and ingredients list on the back of any product. A cost effective substitute for the Ancient Grains would be buying and mixing together individual packets of oats, quinoa, millet and rye!
