From the outside-in, competing can look very appealing and is often glorified due to the highlights we see on social media. Shredded physiques, a sense of camaraderie, shiny trophies and post-comp treats. What’s not to like?
The problem is, it can be difficult to see what’s truly happening behind the scenes. Low energy availability, food focus, mood disturbances, social isolation and disordered eating are just some of the hardships that competitors can face. Unfortunately, the facade created by social media can entice many first time competitors to compete prematurely without having an established foundation. Therefore, it’s crucial to consider a number of factors such as these points above before undertaking a prep.
As passionate competitors and coaches ourselves, by no means are we against stepping on stage! However, we want to ensure others make the process as successful and enjoyable as possible, and prevent complications across all fields! Being a bodybuilder and undertaking a competition prep has the potential to be such a positive, life-changing experience - so set yourself up for success from the get-go and tick these boxes.
